When children beg their parents for a pet, most people's first thought is often a dog, cat, mouse or hamster. However, fish can be some of the greatest pets to own, and are often overlooked.
Watching brightly colored fish swim around their aquariums can be mesmerizing. They seem to glow under the aquarium lights and continuously circle around their own little environment. You can buy accessories to make the tank look like a tiny underwater paradise, with beautiful colored rocks and gravel to adorn the bottom, as well as little statues of mermaids or treasure chests filled with gems and pearls.
A variety of fish can be enjoyed in one tank, and some people even add snails and frogs, creating an entertaining and educational environment. Fish are always in motion, making them never boring to watch. Children can observe their interactions and gain a lesson in science that's better than any undersea documentary on television.
Caring for fish is also easy. Unlike dogs, fish don't need to be walked or constantly entertained, and there's no fur to vacuum. They only need to be fed twice a day and automatic feeders can be used if you need to go out of town. You won't have to find a kennel for the dog or someone to come and feed the cat.
It's important to make sure the tank is properly outfitted with plants for oxygen, a light for the plants to flourish, a thermometer to ensure a healthy temperature, and a filter to keep the water free of toxins. The tank should also be cleaned regularly and filled with distilled water. If a fish becomes ill, talk to a vet, but often raising the temperature of the water can help it become healthy again.
